About the Designer

Seamlessly blending Indian recherché and craftsmanship with modern day western silhouettes, Payal Jain’s name is synonymous with eternal style. An industry veteran with decades of experience under her belt, Payal prides herself on meticulously crafting every piece that she creates with intricate precision. Jain’s eponymous brand has truly become the ageless label for designs that are a result of an eclectic blend of indigenous fabrics and immaculate detailing that stand out in contemporary interpretations. It is this juxtaposition of the classical aesthetic with western sensibilities that has come to be her signature leitmotif. She describes her brand ethos as having ‘A western body with an Indian soul’ which is embodied by each collection that she presents season after season.

Jain is one of the few designers that takes painstaking care of each phase of her design realization. She conditions all the textile development that goes into her collection; from approving every fiber to the actual processing of the weave itself, spending anywhere between 12-18 months developing her line. She believes that each garment be a resplendent journey, telling a unique story. It is this spirit that she imbibes in each of her collections to make them an experience not just garments. Her brand has become more than a label; it is a de rigueur choice for the neo-classical indigenous woman. She upholds the collective standards of an industry coming of its own, ensuring each piece is flawless in its appearance.

Influenced by the arts at a young age (Jain’s mother is a musician and father is a design engineer), her world is pervaded by the creative fluxes including dance, music and fine arts and her twin teenage boys. An artist herself, with her evocative paintings, she conforms to the school which believes that fashion is an art form. It is with these values that have been incorporated in Payal’s unique vision, as collections are pret-a-porter or Haute couture for the modern eclectic woman, and not exposed to the out of the box creative outings which are left to the editorial.

A self-proclaimed workaholic, Payal spends all her time working on her immaculately curated creations. A yoga and meditation aficionado, Jain considers fashion to be a cathartic form of self-expression, one she cherishes more than anything. A less known fact about her is that she is heavily inclined toward interior design, having designed her plush studio and home in New Delhi. She also travels to various exotic parts of the world where she constantly explores different cultures and imbues her collections with these inspirations.

Along with haute couture, her work has delivered aesthetic solutions across different strata’s of the corporate world, which is devoid of uniformity among the different silhouettes, sizes and shapes. Payal thoroughly believes in giving back to the community that has supported her thus far. She has one fashion show a year apart from her Wills India Fashion Week, the proceedings of which go to an NGO she works in association with. Consciously and ethically, she also contributes to the weaver and artisan communities in remote parts of the country that have helped enrich her collections. She has helped generate employment in these areas by using their expertise and techniques and integrating them within her collection. She has also written a book on Fashion Science for XI standard under the CBSC curriculum, which is being prescribed by several schools across the country for Fashion design students.

Graduating “Summa-cum-laude” in 1993, from the prestigious Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco, Payal has seen her vision through, leading the wave of homegrown famed designers. With many accolades under her belt, including dressing trendsetter extraordinaire Victoria Beckham, Priyanka Chopra, Deepti Naval, Saina Nehwal and many others, there is no doubt that Payal Jain and her atelier’s legacy will prevail to be one of the strongest fashion houses in the history of Indian Fashion.
